Let’s test Minitunes

Minitunes is pretty close to its first release. Now’s the time to test it and give feedback about bugs and crashes. Linux users can get the 32bit binaries or build by themselves from source code. Mac users can download this dmg (Intel, Leopard or Snow Leopard required). I especially need testing on Leopard. Please report your experience in the comments and don’t forget to specify your operating system version. Thanks in advance.

  1. Marco says:

  2. giorgio says:

need to install dependencies : libphonon4 phonon

  3. giorgio says:

Great work. Works very well on ubuntu 10.04

  4. Marco says:

    @giorgio

  5. Flavio says:

@Marco You also need many Qt4 modules: network, xml, sql, dbus. And libtag too.

  6. Marco says:

    @Flavio
    Ah all this file :P
I have posted a guide to compile
    http://marcosbox.blogspot.com/2010/06/minitunes-rilasciata-la-versione-per-i.html
    Great work :)

  7. Stefan says:

Hey, nice application and gui and stuff, really like the image list.
    A few comments:

    – next to installing dependencies for compiling I had to run
kcmshell4 kcm_phonon to configure the phonon backend so it was able to play anything at all, so I guess phonon is not really well setup by default if using ubuntu/gnome
    – the artist/album list is sorted by some weird scheme at least I wasn’t able to figure out, so even searching manually for some music is really hard atm (some sorting option in the view menu? second tab row?)
    – artist or album list sometimes dont show covers for artists that really should have a cover (like artists image for fleet foxes)
    – if no cover image was found, consider using a file from the directory the file is in
    – reordering things in the playlist should have some marker that shows where stuff will land (like a line between two items or a triangle on the left)

    cheers

  8. Stefan says:

Ah, more, longer title names in the playlist should be shortened or faded out or font size lessened to a certain degree (i like how apple does that) so the name and the duration dont collide.

  9. Pablomoreno says:

  11. Everton says:

I’ve been testing it in Snow Leopard and the app works great.
It works out of the box with the dmg provided.
I suggest for future releases that you change the upper icons to be more maclike in the mac build, the botton icons are great.
Thank you very much for this great piece of software!

  12. Dany says:

    Great work, as always! :-)
Compiled from source, working great. Really stylish, playlist oriented, web-connected, however I really miss a search-as-you-type feature and Last.fm scrobbling. But I’m sure they’ll come later on.

Just an opinion, I think ‘gtk-info’ icon is more suited to activate the track info view. It’s more obvious :-)

Keep blogging about Minitune’s progress and warn when it becames translatable (Launchpad, please…?), I’ll be glad to translate into Portuguese (Portugal).

    Cheers,
    Daniel

  13. Sergej says:

    L’ho appena provato, molto interessante.
    Snello essenziale :)

  16. Flavio says:

    @everybody, Thanks for the feedback.

  17. Jack says:

I found with a collection of around 13,000 songs and playing it’s using 34.4MB and between 8-12% CPU on my EeePC 1008HA running Ubuntu 10.04.

    Missing:
    * Shuffle all
    * Last.fm scobbling
    * Search (Why has this feature been removed?!)

  18. Fabrizio Mele says:

    @flavio
    ecco il file http://pastebin.com/12iXnZS2

  19. Flavio says:

Grazie Fabrizio, it’s a taglib crash. Can’t do anything for now. The only solution is to run the scanner in a different process.

UPDATE: Wait I’m wrong! I’m not checking for a potentially null variable! Fixing it immediately.

UPDATE: the fix is on Gitorious, thanks again Fabrizio

  20. Clem says:

Testing it now on ubuntu 10.04..Very very nice application! grat job!

As already posted by Jack the search input field is missing, but is shown on many screenshot I have seen on web..weird! maybe this function has been removed in the testing version?

Showing the collection with cover images is a good idea, really good looking!

I have do admit that in Rhythmbox is faster to find the artist I’m looking for, because the are alphabetically sorted.. maybe it will be possible to have artist sorted alphabetically even in minutubes?

    Greetings

  21. Flavio says:

@Clem, Jack the search feature is not ready yet. If I can keep working on the project it will be in a future release.

Also some kind of filtering/sorting will be implemented for Artists and Albums. It’s in the TODO list http://gitorious.org/minitunes/minitunes/blobs/master/TODO

  22. nico says:

    bel lavoro davvero

  23. nico says:

    dimenticavo…..

    uso ubuntu 10.04

    grazie ancora

  24. Clem says:

    @nico
    serve phonon per riprodurre l’audio

    sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer

    dopo funziona

  25. nico says:

    Phonon: KDE’s multimedia Library
The audio playback device HDA intel (STAC92xx Analog) does not work.
Falling back to HDA Intel (STAC92xx Digital)

le altre librerie phonon erano gia installate

    grazie

  26. Gabriele says:

Ho testato il binario 32 bit su sidux……….FANTASTICO!!!
Nessun problema e nessun crash, assolutamente perfetto
Complimenti ancora per i tuoi progetti, aspettiamo minitunes 1.0!!!
    Continua cosi!!!

  27. nico says:

ho provato a compilare i sorgenti

  28. cga says:

    Hi Flavio,

I stumbled upon your blog when I first red about Minitubes and Minitubes on a blog last week. They were talking about small interesting projects, and I agree with them. Yours are.

It’s since I own a Mac that I’m looking for an alternative to iPrunes. I tried Cog but I don’t really fancy it. Indeed I really like Minitunes minimalism and cleanness and I’m sure it will grow better everyday. I’m not adventurous on OSX (not as much as I’m on Linux, I prefer to keep it “clean”) and I installed the 0.1 demo dmg on Snow Leopard 10.6.4 without any issue. I keep my music library small on OSX since I rarely boot into it (of course, I prefer Linux :P) so importing was not a problem.

I won’t repeat other comments and suggestions but I say I basically agree to these points:

    – make it more OSX HID like (icons above all)
    – offer different views (text list beside images), I must say that I love the cover style but I’d prefer to use text. (very clever to put a play icon on mouse over).

I’m sure that these things are planned but:

    – add (at least) OGG, FLAC play . This is something iPrunes won’t do since Evil Stevil won’t support no fruit except apples.
    – iPod/iPhone management
    – preferences (:P)
    – check/automatic update function

I can’t think of more off the top of my head but those would definitely make finally me ditch iTunes for good.

  29. Donald Taylor says:

    Hi Flavio,

    I’m using Mac OS 10.6.4
When I start MiniTunes and then point it to my iTunes library folder it makes an incomplete scan. I have done a complete uninstall – reinstall of MiniTunes but it still fails to make a complete scan. The app plays only a (few) podcasts and audiobooks but nothing else from the itunes music library. My itunes library is pretty big with quite a lot of video so maybe that’s an issue?

    Best,

    Donald

  30. cga says:

    Hi Flavio,

I just want to tell you that Minitunes makes cpu and unibody very hot (almost as flash does).

I monitored Minitunes with top and surprise it doesn’t use much resources as expected. So I won’t really know what could it be, but please pay attention to this overheating subject.

Again, great work for 0.1rc demo.

Craving for future versions and using it as main player on OSX.

    Ciao

  31. nico says:

    risolto installando

    sudo apt-get install amarok xine-console libxine1-ffmpeg phonon-backend-xine kdelibs kdebase-runtime

  32. nico says:

  34. Flavio says:

@Donald, what kind of files in your music collection? AAC, MP3, DRMed files? Did you get them with the iTunes store?

  35. Dagget says:

MiniTunes OS X does not support m4a. Absolute useless in this state.

  36. Flavio says:

@Dagget. True, I’m working on it. Didn’t notice before release, because I actually always avoided that audio format. Anyway m4a support will come asap.

  37. Jay says:

Running Minitunes 1.1.0 on lucid originally installed with gnome but ended up preferring KDE 4.4.2 so I installed it from the repos.

It compiled just fine, started up and scanned my library folder. Took about 1.5 hours to load around 200 gigabytes of music. a few images were not downloaded from Last FM but that’s to be expected considering not everything is probably tagged 100% correct in a large library.

It wouldn’t output sound to the system. It opened the file and looked like it was playing, eg; the progress bar was slowly chugging to the right but no sound. I uninstalled the xine back end like was suggested and it didn’t make a difference. I opened up synaptic and searched for phonon and found kcm-phonon-xine in the list, version 4:4.4.2-0ubuntu4.1. Installing this package got me full sound and functionality.

Hopefully this will help someone else having a similar issue.

The player is absolutely beautiful and works like a champ! The only thing I can’t seem to find that I really need is a way to sort the left pane. 200gig of music is not easy to deal with without the ability to sort the list alphabetically.

All in all the Dev deserves PROPS for this awesome app! I can’t wait to see what the next release will look like!

  38. Jay says:

    oops I meant Minitunes 0.1.1!

    Got ahead of you, sorry!
