Minitube
There’s life outside the browser!

Minitube is a native YouTube client. With it you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.
Minitube is not about cloning the original YouTube web interface, it aims to create a new TV-like experience.

Current version is 0.9, released on January 23, 2010. Here are the main changes since version 0.8:
- Ability to clear recent keywords (by popular demand!)
- Enhanced fullscreen mode with toolbar and playlist (Linux only)
- Fixed buggy toolbar search box (Thanks to Salvatore Benedetto)
- Fixed long queries in the recent keywords list (Thanks to Vadim P.)
- Fixed time formatting bug with videos longer than an hour (Thanks to Rene Bogusch)
- Norwegian translation by Jan W. Skjoldal
Choose your platform:
- Linux – 32bit binaries. You need Qt version >= 4.5 and the Phonon libraries. Ubuntu users can get their package from GetDeb or from Christian Mangold’s PPA. Gentoo has an official ebuild ready to be emerged. Also Slackware has an official build. ArchLinux users have their package too. OpenSUSE has user contributed RPMs. The GStreamer Phonon backend is recommended. Minitube strives to integrate well with both GNOME and KDE.
- Mac OS X – Universal binary. You need at least OS X version 10.4 (Tiger) and QuickTime version 7.0.
- Windows – A few people tried to build Minitube on Windows but the results were not releaseable. This is mainly due to the weakness/instability of Phonon on Windows. Let’s wait for Qt 4.6.
- Source code. You’re free to build Minitube by yourself, modify it and redistribute it according to the GNU General Public License.

Contribute
Ok so now you’re a happy Minitube user and think you can watch free videos all day long? Hey, it’s not that easy! You’ll always feel terribly guilty for using such a great app without giving something back. Here’s your chance to feel clean again and contribute to the world progress.
Become a translator
If you speak any non-english language, consider becoming a translator. Even if Minitube already has a translation for your language, it could be outdated or use some love. It does not take any programming skills. It is just a matter of opening a file with a program called Qt Linguist, translating the strings, saving and sending it back to me.
Create packages for Linux
I’m not going to create packages myself. I’d like each Linux distro community to create their perfectly integrated Minitube package. Bonus points for those who get the packages in official distribution repositories.
Hack on Minitube
Minitube is developed in C++ using the excellent Qt framework. The code is hosted at Gitorious. Git allows you to easily branch the codebase and scratch your personal Minitube itch. There is also a list of Things that need to be done. Happy hacking!

Any plans for making it usable with kde-phonon?
I use gentoo, and I can’t have both qt-phonon and kde-phonon installed, and minitube fails with kde-phonon.
I learned of Minitube on the Apple website. I have a daily blog that features fun stuff of general interest. Minitube could be useful in helping me find content. Thanks Flavio.
@spitfire
AFAIK kde-phonon and qt-phonon should be compatible. Kde-phonon should be in fact a newer version then qt’s. What phonon backend are you using? Until now Minitube has only been tested with GStreamer.
@ralphgeiger
You’re welcome! Well, you could also post about Minitube…
PS I received your donation just a second ago… Thank you so much!
Hi Flavio,
on my system ( Jaunty ) I installed the phonon package and the gstreamer backend, but minitube seems can’t find their presence or can’t load them.
The error is:
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
Any advice?

I can’t reproduce your problem, but a quick search reveals a similar problem for various people on Linux. You should ask for support on the Ubuntu forums since the problem is not Minitube specific but applies to any Phonon application.

Hey it would be awesome if you could get videos from all website on the internet. It would make this program blast off!
For future reference, on ubuntu jaunty ( and probably also in other distribuitions ) the following command resolves the issue:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/kde4/plugins/phonon_backend /usr/lib/qt4/plugins/phonon_backend
The error goes away and it’s possible to listen to some good music through minitube and it should resolve other phonon based applications problems.
Minitube work on my Arch Linux with KDEmod4. Thanks
Do you think about other video page for example vimeo.com, odsiebie.com ?
@Energizer
Nice to hear that! Adding other content sources would be cool, but for now I’m concentrating on the basics. You know, trivial stuff like actually being able to watch videos

I have tried it a few times, and one of the things that I really like about minitube is that I don’t have to turn off or change my sleep settings while using it. I would really like to have better control over the videos I watch (scan and so on) and be able to create a playlist and hide that confounded menu bar on the side of the screen.
@Lenon
Yeah the monitor going in standby on YouTube is awful. Been hit by that one many times while laying on the sofa
I’m not sure I understand your comment, do you want a way to hide the playlist? Can’t you just go fullscreen?
I’ve just compiled it from gentoo repository, but the only thing I get is: “Segmentation Fault”.

Flavio: It would be great, if you could post here all the dependencies you need to build minitube, or the technologies and codecs you use, if it’s possible, so we can check our installed packages and eventually complete the list of needed packages. Thanks.
@Prcek
The strict dependencies are Qt4 and Phonon. Each Phonon backend has different dependencies. The Gstreamer backend is recommended over Xine. I don’t know about the Gstreamer package structure in Gentoo. It is up to the packager the task of determining the package dependencies. GStreamer has to be able to play MPEG4 H.264 video with AAC audio. That’s all.

Yes, it’s git version. Thx for fix, worked.
1) thanks for the nice app
2) if nobody does ukrainian translation yet I can take care of that
3) I wish you used something other than phonon for sound output. On my fedora 10 (fluxbox wm and alsa) minitube block audioutput for all other applications when running. Also there is no sound in minitube if it was started after some other player.
@atenrok
You’re welcome! Thanks for volunteering for a translation, send me an email.
The Phonon issue has to be specific to your distribution, maybe Phonon is using OSS instead of ALSA. What backend are you using, gstreamer or xine? You may try configuring Phonon with qt-config or the KDE system settings. I guess you’ll have to bring up this issue in the Fedora forums.
Flavio> The Phonon issue has to be specific to your distribution, maybe Phonon is using OSS instead of ALSA. What backend are you using, gstreamer or xine? You may try configuring Phonon with qt-config or the KDE system settings.
I wish I knew that. Minutube is magically playing audio but qtconfig-qt4 shows that phonon is not available, even though I have all these installed
phonon-backend-xine-4.3.1-4.fc10.i386
phonon-devel-4.3.1-4.fc10.i386
phonon-backend-gstreamer-4.3.1-4.fc10.i386
phonon-4.3.1-4.fc10.i386
Thus I have no idea how to configure it.
@atenrok
qtconfig-qt4 shows that phonon is not available because your distro (as many others) compiled qt4 without phonon and used kde-phonon. As I wrote before, you can use KDE system settings to configure Phonon. Anyway for this kind of issues you have to refer to your distro support: forums, mailing lists, etc. It’s up to your distro to ship a working Phonon setup.
Hi,
I upgraded and still the video doesn’t show, but the audio plays.
OS X 10.5.7
Any idea?
Hello Flavio,
Minitube creates a directory $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/Flavio\ Tordini/ and creates a file called Minitube.conf there. This file does not look like it contains any user editable configuration options but rather “user-specific non-essential (cached) data” (as per xdg spec), i.e. last update, recent searches and last geometry, and should therefore go into $XDG_CACHE_HOME instead of $XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Since minitube respects the XDG_CONFIG_HOME variable it should probably respect the rest of the xdg spec, too.
Although the xdg spec does not specify a naming convention for directories created by applications below the *_HOME directories, minitube should probably follow the convention of using the application’s name rather than the author’s name, which would allow users to easily locate the files they are interested in. It would be nice if you could correct this for the next release.
Regards,
Chenno

couple suggestions to the version 0.4 (can speak for linux only)
* mute button: change icon when the audio is muted
* “save video as” button (perhaps in the context menu of the playlist item?)
* there are buttons to move playlist items up and down, what about the button to exclude certain item from being played? Obviously that item has to be marked somehow when the state changes(greyed-out text or something).
Hi Flavio!!
I’ve been using Minitube till the last update that I’ve made. I don’t know what happend, but I can’t see any video or even listen music… The only thing that I can watch are the playlist… but doesn’t run. What could be the reason?
I use Ubuntu 9.04 -jaunty Jackalope- But is important clarify that I am newey =)
Thanks in advance!! while Minitube works, was awesome! Congrats!!
Best,
@Gary D
Do you have an updated QuickTime too?
@chenno
You’re probably right, but this looks like a very minor issue to me. Anyway I’ll eventually look into it especially if some real Linux package maintainer complains about it too.
@atenrok
* mute button icon is handled by Phonon and it actually changes, I’ll try to make it use the FreeDesktop icon
* Yeah video download has always been on the TODO list
* Can’t you just press Del to remove the unwanted item?
@Vivargentina
Do older versions still work on your system? Maybe it’s not Minitube but some lib you removed?

There is a little thing I’d like to see in future releases: An option to enable HQ or HD (if it’s possible). That would be great feature under linux since the Adobe flashplayer is still quite slow and makes HQ/HD videos unplayable on my machine.
Thanks for your program anyway.

Hello Flavio, Minitube is a cool app, tnx!
Unfortunately like Gary D (#comment-566) I have no video, only sound is playing. System is OS X Tiger 10.4.11. QuickTime is recent version.
Referring to my previous post, I just also checked version 0.4 of minitube and it’s the same there, no video just sound.
@Ningus, I guess I cannot help you, but it has to be something in your QuickTime setup. Did you install additional codecs or stuff? If so, can you try to remove it temporarily?
@Azrael, Yes HD streaming (for the lucky ones that have enough bandwidth) is a great feature. Also Minitube will try to download HD videos (when video downloading is implemented)
Tnx for reply, Flavio. There is no additional codecs or other things for QuickTime here. So I think it has to do with rather old hardware: G4 ppc, outdated graphics card pre-agp …
I compiled 0.5, It will retrieve data on the left side of the screen but will not play anything on the rightside as if it cannot actually download the file.

szef, Qt version? You need at least 4.4
UPDATE: Oops! I checked the docs and it appears that the fillRect() variant that Minitube is using was introduced in version 4.5. I’ll fix this in the next release.
so it will be imposible to use it under debian lenny? Qt is 4.4.3.
@szef Yes, unfortunately. Unless you put a newer Qt in the Minitube directory and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH. If you’re not familiar with this kind of hackery, I guess you’re better downloading an older Minitube version and see if it runs. (just replace 0.5 with 0.4 in the download link)
same problem with 0.4 version…
szef: Oh well, I guess I’ll have to update the requirements. Qt 4.6 is coming and I don’t think it is sane to spend time on 4.4. Sorry!
Same problem as Ningus! Sound, but no video.
My presumption is that, like Mplayer, the driver doesn’t like my computer. This was solved by a nifty feature in Mplayer that let me change the video driver I used.
I don’t know whether this can be done, being just the average desktop user, but I thought I’d mention it!
Thanks very much!
@RadioFrndly
You have to sort out this kind of issues with your Linux distribution support. It’s up to your distro to ship a working Phonon for your hardware.
I have builded 0.5 unter debian sid without problem.
But after the start, if i try to watch a video, then i get in terminal:
Phonon error: “A required codec is missing. You need to install the following codec(s) to play this content: H.264″ 1
I must say, i don’t have KDE running, but gstreamer, h264codecs and phonon are installed.
@towo:
As I told other users, for Phonon setup problems you have to refer to your distro support (forums, IRC, whatever…). Anyway try to install gstreamer-ffmpeg codecs.

In ogni caso GRAZIE !!!

@Wei: you can try the 32bit builds. If you’re on 64bit then compile by yourself. Let’s hope someone will create a Fedora package.
Flavio nice work. Thank you. But just a question though.
Could you make (fix) it work with xine phonon backend and the gstreamer backend?
Zyb, it does work with the GStreamer backend. I also had success with Xine, but don’t feel like recommending it. Anyway what’s your problem?
Very nice work.
It is possible to extract the video from any flash stream and play it with phonon the way you do for youtube? It sucks the flash video implementation is so poor on Linux that flash videos are totally worthless for Linux users.

Wow, great program! One problem though, maybe you can help me figure it out…
All the movies are tinted blue.
It’s like watching TV, except all the actors have been replaced by smurfs!
Have you ever heard of this problem? I tried restarting the application and it’s still happening! It’s like yellow has been replaced by blue, but only in a few places.
Please email me if you have any ideas about this!!
Hi Chris, I have this problem too on my notebook and I wasn’t able to solve it myself. It’s not Minitube’s fault. You have to ask on your distribution forum.

I do have a suggestion. Is there anyway to add a button on minitube for downloading the youtub video? That would be cool.
In the gNewSense forum there used to be a script the could be used for downloading the video once the URL is placed in.
Perhaps there could be a script made to fetch the URL autmotically?
Great job, and keep up the good work. Really, that’s the only thing that comes to mind right now that I’d like to see it be able to do that it doesn’t do already.

Perfect job. Congratulations.

Ciao Flavio. Thank you for your great job – I just discovered Minitube and love the interface and low CPU consumption.
Do you plan to add the rating scale next to the video thumbnails in some next version? Even though I don’t need to rate videos while watching, I like to know which one have been rated best so that I can instantly pick up a ‘good’ one. This is especially true for videoclips: out of 10 videos, a few will be official and the rest are poor reproductions, and without the ratings it’s more difficult to identify the ‘real’ ones.
NON FUNZIONA / DOESN’T WORK

[...] Minitube is a killer app for enjoying YouTube vids that not only doesn’t have anything to do with your web browser, but it also doesn’t require Adobe Flash. Instead you simply enter a keyword and Minitube creates a video stream for you. Of course you don’t have to watch the whole stream, you can cherry pick the video or videos that you want to watch and just sit back and enjoy the videos. One immensely useful feature would be a way to retrieve the Youtube URL, for instance, to share the link with others. It’s kind of tedious to copy the video name, open a browser, go to the site, match the names, etc… maybe even a menu/hotkey/button to “Copy URL” to the clipboard?
@Hamed Ramerz: Minitube should work with HTTP proxies. It uses the global system settings. On Linux the important bit is that the HTTP_PROXY environment variable is set. Yeah free software and society

@Anonymous: Wow you’re the first hater here. This is the proof that Minitube is becoming popular!
I don’t see a clear place to report a bug (would be great if lp project was active for minitube).
My report is that if you paste a huge string into search, the next time you start Minitube it’ll expand to full the whole screen and mode (in my case, dual monitors). Might want to add some wrapping or elipcis in there.
Making enough searches for the long one to go away fixed it.

@mattia: Sure, it’s in the TODO list…
@Anonymous: I believe that Miro is a better way to subscribe to a YouTube channel, try it it’s awesome.
just installed it on karmic and it doesn’t play shit. not a single video plays.
@fifo: http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube/faq#novideo and please be more polite.
I love Minitube very much!! It’s great and runs videos so nicely and smoothly and I don’t need to open Youtube on the browser anymore, save if I want to post a comment or something, which I hardly ever do..
I’m using a MacBook Pro. I only wish there was a way to access my subscriptions in Minitube. Then I’d never use YouTube through a browser again.
A killer feature would be to make MiniTube connect to RealPlayer Downloader, so that you can download your viewed videos from there. When you watch videos on the YouTube website in a browser, all videos automatically appears in the RealPlayer Downloader, so it might not be a big job to make it happen in MiniTube, too.
Yaman, features that require authentication are low priority for now.
Valther, video downloading is in the TODO list. No need fot that Realplayer thing.
Hey Flavio,
I like Minitube and I use it almost everyday.
Great work !
I wanted to suggest a few things about it,
could we post or mail them to you ?
Isn’t this just a clone of Totem’s Youtube-Plugin? I miss a cachingfeature which allows me store a clip to watch it later even without internet connection.
mrjack please post here.
Funatiker, I think Minitube is very different and much more useful than Totem as a YouTube client. Minitube plays videos one after another so you can relax and enjoy videos while you are doing things or just listen to some background music as if it was a radio. Moreover Minitube playlist is editable. Another important aspect is that Linux users are just a fraction. Mac users are much more. And a Windows version is on its way. Btw, this is a FAQ: http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube/faq#totem
Video download is in the TODO list
Nice program !!!
maybe a nice thing for the next version a to make playlist different search terms or a play true function during searching
Flavio, I thought that progress bar should be visible in fullscreen mode.
That would be really helpful ’cause, now, we need to step back to normal mode.
When playing a video, I’d also like to see the time info (maybe elapsed time) of each video (ie 0:30 – 2:25).
Looking forward to Minitube.
Thanks
This is probably the best app ever for youtube!!! Sincerly!! I plan to donate something as soon as I top up my paypal account. Great job! I hate flash, and on a Mac it does not work! This app is great! I can watch yt videos PERFECTLY now!!! Thank you so much!!!
Feature request? Maybe the possibility to clicking on a link on a yt video and open it with the app, or just copy and paste a link a play it on the app with no flash.
Thank you! This program works very well!
However, at first it didn’t play any video at all. It was because I had installed the Xine backend –along the Gstreamer backend and it was the preferred backend. Setting the Gstreamer backend as preferred on KDE settings or removing the Xine backend solves the issue.
The settings thing is a problem for non-KDE users, so I would stick to the xine backend removal.
In Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer
sudo apt-get remove phonon-backend-xine
Btw, I think a nice feature would be to be able to paste a youtube link somewhere to open the video on minitube.
Terrific idea! I installed 0.8.1 in Ubuntu Karmic from Christian Mangold’s PPA. When I run it, everything seems to work OK up to the presentation of the Start image over the selected video. When I click the image, nothing happens. The video never starts.
Well, I whined before I read. The FAQ told me what to do, and now everything is fine.
I think it’s not honour system dns settings..How can I open it with the proxy adress which I preferred ? I think I should open it from the terminal but I don’t know the necessary codes..Thank You..
Thank you very much. It works well. It would be nice, to get links working in this app.
Greetings Dana

aptitude install libphonon4 phonon-backend-gstreamer
Un Saludo.
I had the same problem than much, but i only needed install the library phonon-backend-gstreamer under Ubuntu and all fixed, together with the library libphonon4 of course.
Only needs run the next command as root:
aptitude install libphonon4 phonon-backend-gstreamer
Greetings.
It would be nice if the videos didn’t automatically start playing. Think of those of us with poor bandwidth and/or download caps! I try to stop the download and it takes me back to the search interface. Very frustrating!
Secondly, an option to save videos would be awesome.
Anyway, great work! Save for those two caveats, this is a brilliant little app and saves a lot of time for those of us who just want the important bits of YouTube.
(Oh, I had another idea! What about compatibility with other video sites than youtube? You could even aggregate search results from other sites and display them all in one place! Now there’s an exciting idea.)
Hi,
Great aplication! Can’t you include a feature to see only a specific user’s videos? Adult’s videos on youtube is’nt possible watching…
On Ubuntu 9.10 I had a bug where it wouldn’t play any videos that I solved myself.
The package does not mark the dependency for phonon-backend-gstreamer which it needs to work.
I just installed the needed phonon backend manually and now it works.
Ottimo e leggero, va veloce e si vede bene, grazie
@Patchouli try to run minitube in a shell and paste the result into pastebin.com, later put here the url to help you, thanks.
Great app. I will blog about it. Congrats!
Please, please, implement this (and I’ll buy you at least 20 beers
):
- Google video support.
- Limit search for a determined length (for example, only shows videos larger than 20min).
- Implement playlists and allow user to add videos to them (for example, clicking right button and leting them to choose what playlist to add).
- Save videos in a folder indicated by user.
If you implement thouse, I promise not to use the web for watching videos anymore.
Thank you for your work!
Complimenti Flavio, linkato da lifehacker
Ciao Marco!
Awesome, thanks for this software, flash player uses over 85% cpu (pent 4 1.7ghz 1 gb sdram nvidia graphics (i think 64mb) arch linux 2.6.31-ARCH, firefox 3.5.6 2mbit/2mbit internet) and the video crawls most of the time. i usually use downloadhelper to save the vids and watch in mplayer later. your software works great it downloads the video fast displays it mostly without stuttering on the fly, even with firefox open at the same time.
i second the opinion of save and open features (for mounted drives) also add url feature for direct links.
thank you sincerely for creating this.

Hey, I’m running Mac OS 10.5.8 and whenever I use Minitube it works for a few seconds and then the sound gets all crackly and goes away completely, even when I quit the program my sound is gone. This only happens with v0.81. I don’t think it’s a hardware issue because if I restart the computer the audio’s fine, until I run Minitube again. This was a big disappointment because I love using this program, it’s so much faster than the YouTube website on my computer! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Flavio,
I really like your application. If you have the time, there’s one thing you could implement, which would make it even better.
I would like to play youtube ‘playlists’, because that would give me more of a ‘party-mode’ feel, and less of the same video’s.
-or- show video’s from a single user.
I hope you understand the value it could add to Minitube.
Does Minitube support saving video?
Minitube should allow to get an Youtube’s URL and fetch video from that.
I love Minitube
i run a slow old ubuntu pc and youtube in a web browser just doesn’t work for me
but minitube fixes it. Yay! anyway.. i dont like how there is no way to read the description except right before the video plays. it also could use youtube account integration
You have created a software art service. I believe you should be paid a great amount. Probably, you could have done that. But you gave to the people on spaceship earth. I live in a country that has damaged people. If I could I would pay you $100,000 dollars, euros, whatever I, would. Unfortunately, I do not have $1.00. When I do, you shall receive. Thank you. Thank you James! Maybe you are exaggerating things a bit…
To all the people suggesting features: Even if I don’t reply to each one, i do read and take suggestions into account when deciding priorities and things to do. So keep suggestions coming.
sempre qui XD
grazie al piu presto disponibile
su MIB e altro per mandriva ghghgh
ciao e grazie
Hi there! Thanks for your awesome application!
It would be cool if Minitube would make use of a custom icon theme installed on ubuntu by the user. So that I would have “my own” icons for play/pause, skip, stop, fullscreen and so on…
The new fullscreen controls and playlist are a really good feature, but I would prefer it when it would not resize the video showing up.
Flavio, nice fixes in the newer version !
Good to see the toolbar in fullscreen mode.
I’d be happy to suggest more features.
Looking forward to Minitube 1.0 : )
nice update
hey Flavio
Minutube compiles very well ( some warnings )
with Xubuntu9.10 and libs added .
ThanKx .
Revoyure .
I have problem, i used regular and git version and not work for me i have KDE 4.4 RC2 and QT 4.6.1 but it is not possible to play inside minitube video i must with ctrl+y with web browser
i love minitube ! mille grazie !
flash on my mac is slow and this was exactly what i was looking for.
its so fast and reliable. Keep up the excenllent work !
Grazie
Hi, you made a great piece of software!
I started using it a few days ago in ubuntu karmic, and it works great. Very low cpu usage and a nice and simple GUI. That’s what I was looking for. You made it, thanks!
I only missed an option to paste a youtube link into minitube. Perhaps the search box could do this, detecting if the text is a youtube link.
Ciao!
Sorry, I didn’t read the TODO file included in the sources
The feature I meant is already detailed in the TODO list.
Thank you and keep on with the good work
Come faccio?
Not sure if anyone has already said this.
A .deb package for Debian sid can be install from :
#deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main non-free contrib
Has the newest version as well. Great apps, thanks.
Complimenti,
I was install minitube succesful!
It was working….except for play video…
I’m use Ubuntu 9.10
hello, i guess that be a new problem about html5 on youtube… can somebody correct me??
Minitube is a fantastic software, works flawlessly on my netbook running Karmic, really great work with the GUI. However, to deliver a better than browser experience some media player functions like playlist save, playlist loop can complete the jukebox/radio like experience. Separating the search process with the player would be pretty great as well(search while video playing)
