Minitube
Minitube is a YouTube desktop client.
With it you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream.
Minitube is not about cloning the original YouTube web interface, it aims to create a new TV-like experience.
- Light on your computer. By consuming less CPU, Minitube preserves battery life and keeps your laptop cool. That's because Minitube does not use the Flash Player.
- High Definition. Minitube plays HD videos up to 1080p. Go fullscreen and watch them play fluidly.
- No need to use a browser. Your browser is really good at surfing the Web, but not so good at video playback. Use the right app for the job.
- Stop fiddling. Just search for something. Minitube automatically plays videos one after another. Sit back and enjoy.

Windows
The Windows version is still not ready. Check back soon.
- Mac OS X You need at least OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
- Linux Read the setup instructions. Please consider making a donation.
- Sources GNU General Public License. The code is hosted at Gitorious.

It really looks like a GREAT app. I very quickly get the thumbnails etc BUT on top of where the video should play I get “Could not open media source”. Any easy fix? Ctrl+Y sends me straight to the YouTube video in Firefox and it starts playing immediately in the browser so the URL is obviously correct.
I forgot to mention: Linux Mint 9 on a EeePc901. I did all the recommended steps in previous posts regarding gstreamer etc. but still the same.
Hello from France, I have the same problem and the same message on my eepc1008HA with Ubuntu 9.1..
Same here on a EeePC1008 as well running Ubuntu 10.04 / Minitube version .9 & 1.0
Just happened all of a sudden. Used to work great 2 days ago
The same problem. With Ubuntu 10.04 / Minitube version .9. Two days ago: Could not open media sources.
Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources.Could not open media sources. . . . Did youtube block the api????????

I think youtube DID change stuff around – minitube was working fine a few days ago.Miro video downloader doesn’t work either – so they tweaked stuff. Now forced to use proprietary flash player again. They REALLY don’t want us downloading user vids & playing them in non-flash video players! EXCUSE US! lol! yeah – prolly’ won’t be long b4 they have the bright idea of encrypting everything on their site so we’re forced to use flash to unlock everything… :/
Great work on this program btw!
If you could code in support for the vdpau API to use the decoding hardware of nVidia cards – that’d be great!
It doesn’t seem to work anymore
Hi, I’d like to add that Minitube now seems to be broken for me as well. It gives the dreaded == Phonon error: “Could not open media source.” 2 == error message now. It will connect to Youtube to get the thumbs but will not play any video.
It’s a great free program, Flavio, so if you have time to update it sometime it would be really appreciated! Cheers.
having the same problem here on ubuntu lucid and having just installed minitube 1.0 from ppa repo, gstreamer phonon backend as explained in the instruction for ubuntu user.
Great app anyway
Fixed in the latest (Git) version (=>Minitube 1.0.1):
1 – git clone git://gitorious.org/minitube/minitube.git
2 – cd minitube; qmake PREFIX=/usr
3 – make
4 – sudo make install
5 (optional) – sudo update-desktop-database -q /usr/share/applications; sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor
P.S.
Thanks Flavio!
Could not get it work on ubuntu 10.04. First it says “error could not locate MRL plugin” so i used “sudo apt-get install libqt4-network libqt4-dbus libqt4-sql-sqlite libtag1c2a phonon-backend-gstreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad” and now it just says “fatal error”. I have all the gstreamer plugins installed and i removed the xine backend thing.
thank’s Not, that’s fixed the “could not open media source” on ubuntu 10.04.
Im using Archlinux and i have minitube from the source, and when i installed it everything works fine, but now appears in a yellow ballon in the top of the program saying “could not open media source”. Hope you can fix it
@Andrés
Use minitube git until next version will come out, it works.

$yaourt -S minitube-git

Hey guys. I am also having the “could not find source” problem. I would also like to point out the firefox plugin video downloader helper quit working at the same time minitube did. Since they both quit at the same time, It seemed obvious to me that youtube must be up to something.
Just wanted to point out that this was not the only software affected.
Check the post by noT for the solution. I used his method and it worked for me. Minitube is now functional again. Thanks noT!
Thanks, noT
For not-really-geeks like me:
You don’t seem to need ‘PREFIX=/usr’ in Step 2.
You may need to install git and qt, plus dependencies.
And it helps, as always, to read the INSTALL file
Hello Flavio ,
i’m using minitube on Arch linux, i installed it from aur. I’ve a strange problem: sometimes when i try to play a video, after just one minute or less it doesn’t go on. If i wait a bit starts next song. :S
I have a error in minitube:
“ERROR FATAL: Could not open media source”
i dont know why happened that.
Hi Flavio!
Thanks a lot for this awesome application. The current launchpad debs should indeed really be updated. The source version works perfectly for Ubuntu 10.04.
To add to noT’s list:
1 – sudo aptitude install libqt4-phonon-dev
2 – echo “Install directory:”; cd /opt
3 – git clone git://gitorious.org/minitube/minitube.git
4 – cd minitube; qmake PREFIX=/usr
5 – make
6 – sudo make install
7 – echo “optional…”; sudo update-desktop-database -q /usr/share/applications; sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor
